In Matthew we see a sharp distinction between two opposing forces. There is Jesus, God’s appointed Messiah, the true King. Then there is his enemy, Satan, who usurps power and has his own kingdom (Matthew 12:26; 2 Corinthians 4:4; Ephesians 2:2; Colossians 1:13). On Jesus’ side are His angels and His spiritual brothers and sisters—“sons of the kingdom” (Matthew 13:38). On Satan’s side are evil spirits and rebellious people—“sons of the evil one” (Matthew 13:38). Jesus and His followers speak truth (John 1:14,17; Ephesians 4:15,21,25). Satan and his followers speak lies (John 8:44).
The spiritual war between these opposing forces is real, and the choices we make have real consequences. If we are to choose God’s side, we must love truth. Even in the most difficult trials, we must choose truth and reject lies. Some of the greatest trials have to do with great displays of power. Look carefully at the contest between truth and lies in 2 Thessalonians 2. Notice the impressive power of Satan. Notice especially why God allows His enemy to use such power.
The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness (2 Thessalonians 2:9-12).
