As soldiers in Christ’s army, we have a singular focus—pleasing one Lord. “No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him” (2 Timothy 2:4). “Civilian pursuits” include earthly matters that distract and that divide loyalties. Many, for example, are passionate about politics, often for good reasons. What happens when church leaders publicly support one political party? They become entangled in worldly matters. Worse, they alienate their fellow-members who favor competing political parties. Remember, “our citizenship is in heaven” (Philippians 3:20). Promote brotherly unity by the singular focus: “Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth” (Colossians 3:2).
