Thomas, when he first saw the risen Christ, became sure that Jesus was his Lord – his Master and Ruler. Just ten days after Jesus was taken up to heaven, Peter spoke to Jews gathered in Jerusalem for their Feast of Pentecost. He showed them the evidence of Jesus’ resurrection, and then he said,
Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified (Acts 2:36).
The promises made by God through the Old Testament prophets had come true. The prophets said the Christ had to rule on David’s throne at God’s right hand (Psalm 89; 110; 132; Luke 1:31-33). Peter showed that these prophecies were fulfilled by Jesus rising to rule at God’s side in heaven (Acts 2:30-33).
… he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church (Ephesians 1:20-22).
ERV for Ephesians 1:19-22: It is the same as the mighty power he used to raise Christ from death and put him at his right side in the heavenly places. He put Christ over all rulers, authorities, powers, and kings. He gave him authority over everything that has power in this world or in the next world. God put everything under Christ’s power and made him head over everything for the church.
This was just what the prophet Daniel had said. One as a “Son of Man” went to God “with the clouds of heaven.” There He fully received kingly authority over all people, a kingdom that would never be destroyed (Daniel 7:13-14). Jesus Himself said,
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me” (Matthew 28:18).
And
“I also conquered [won] and sat down with my Father on his throne” (Revelation 3:21).
The throne of God is the highest throne possible. It is the throne from which Jesus now rules as Lord and King over all the universe.
