First, we recognize that Jesus was born into a covenant different from ours. In God’s plan, it was necessary that His Son be born as a Jew under a system of law.
But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. (Galatians 4:4-5)
That same section of Scripture describes that age under law as a time of imprisonment and slavery (Galatians 3:22-23; 4:1-3, 22-31 cf. 5:1). But God intended for that age to end. Christ’s purpose was to move His people from slavery to the full rights of sonship. Also, that same passage has just shown when the law’s rule ended.
Now before faith [in Christ] came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed. So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian. (Galatians 3:23-25)
