So successful were the miracles of the Bible that all, even enemies, acknowledged their supernatural nature. How could it be otherwise? Think about the hundreds and thousands of witnesses. Think about what they were seeing and reporting.
- An invalid has been unable to move himself for 38 years. At the command of Jesus, the man immediately stands and walks and carries his bedding. Jesus’ enemies investigate. They cannot deny the miracle, but are angry that the healed man has ‘worked’ on a Sabbath (John 5:1-18).
- A grown man has never experienced light for he has been blind from birth. Jesus gives him the gift of clear eyesight. Jesus’ enemies again investigate, examining him and his parents. But their efforts only serve to confirm the reality of the miracle (John 9:1-34).
- Lazarus has been dead four days. Jesus goes to his grave and calls out, “Lazarus, come out!” Lazarus comes out, still wrapped in burial cloth. Jesus tells those present, “Unbind him, and let him go” (John 11:1-44). Many people interact with the resurrected Lazarus. This undeniable miracle and its spreading fame accelerate enemy efforts to get rid of both Jesus and Lazarus.
