It is easy to define “one faith” to suit our own beliefs, to create “Jesus” as we wish Him to be. Disliking doctrinal sections of the New Testament, we may be tempted to focus just on the Jesus of the four Gospel accounts. They are supremely precious and foundational. But they are not the whole story. Jesus Himself prepared His disciples for more to come. The result is the rest of the New Testament in which Jesus continues what He began. The living Lord reigns, revealing Himself and “all the truth” through the Holy Spirit. As He Himself shows, some matters are weightier than others, but no matter is to be neglected. What, then, are we to make of shortcuts that claim creeds or confessions as platforms for unity? The idea is to unite on the simplest statement to which we humans can agree. But the real Jesus calls us to complete unity that includes all His royal will.
