“The unity of the Spirit” is much more than human perceptions. It is spiritual reality far greater than our passing feelings or our changing relationships. For example, when Paul was on trial, his fellow Christians deserted him. Was Paul then any less a member of Christ and His church? Obviously not. Even amid difficulties, all who are “in Christ” share the “one Spirit” whose life fills the “one body.” This takes us back to Jesus’ prayer for unity (John 17). He defines perfect unity as the Father in the Son, the Son in the Father, believers in them, and they in believers—which is the role of the Holy Spirit. That is why Christ abiding in us and us abiding “in Christ” are truths so basic to the nature of biblical unity. It is heaven’s reality that we strive to reflect, often imperfectly, here on earth.
