As the Old Testament story unfolds, so does the theme of the coming Messiah or Christ, the special Leader to be appointed by God.
He would come through the family line of Judah, the father of future kings (Genesis 49:8-10).
He would be the prophet like Moses. “I will put My words in his mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command him” (Deuteronomy 18:18). The New Testament identifies this prophet as Jesus (Acts 3:20-24; 7:37).
He would come from King David’s family line (2 Samuel 7:1-29; Psalm 89). He would be the Messiah, the Christ. (“Messiah” is from the Hebrew language. “Christ” is from the Greek language. Both terms refer to the Person “anointed” or appointed by God to lead His people.) This future Leader would have complete authority, even being “Lord” over His own ancestor, David!
[A Psalm of David.] The LORD says to my Lord: “Sit at My right hand, until I make Your enemies Your footstool.” The LORD sends forth from Zion Your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of Your enemies! Your people will offer themselves freely on the day of Your power … (Psalm 110:1-3 cf. Mark 12:35-37; Acts 2:34; 1 Corinthians 15:25; Hebrews 1:13).
The LORD says to my Lord: “Sit at My right hand.”
Over and over, the prophets pointed ahead to this one Lord. He would be the “Ruler” to be born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2). “[God] will speak to [the nations] in His wrath, and terrify them in His fury, saying, ‘As for Me, I have set My King on Zion, My holy hill’” (Psalm 2:1-8). “His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and His kingdom one that shall not be destroyed” (Daniel 7:13-14).
