We also emphasize the sound principle of context. Each verse of Scripture has surrounding verses and paragraphs. Each Bible book was written in a context, purposefully meeting needs in a particular period. Just as importantly, we readers live in our current context. Competing denominations have their respective authorities, their divergent approaches to the Scriptures. This calls for us to differentiate truth from error. What is Christ’s way, revealed in apostolic writings, as distinct from today’s apostasies? If we have been part of the latter, the point of understanding the Bible is to hear Christ’s call to repent.

Tendencies to stray already were evident in Christ’s first congregations. Some at Corinth were beginning to listen to “false apostles” (2 Corinthians 11:13-20). To this struggling church, Paul said, “Aim for restoration” (2 Corinthians 13:11). Revelation was written to seven congregations in Asia, of which five had allowed problems to fester. Notice Jesus’ call to repentance and restoration.

I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent. (Revelation 2:4-5)

I have a few things against you…. Therefore repent. If not, I will come to you soon and war against them with the sword of My mouth. (Revelation 2:14, 16)

Remember, then, what you received and heard. Keep it, and repent. (Revelation 3:3)
