In the Bible, Gospel simply means Good News. This is the news we need, a message so positive that it uplifts and excites. It introduces you, not to ideas or self-help theories, but to the Person who is Good News.
Beginning with this Scripture [Philip] told him the Good News about Jesus (Acts 8:35)
[Believers were] preaching the Lord Jesus. And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number who believed turned to the Lord (Acts 11:20-21).
The Person of the Good News has real power, backing up His claims by doing the impossible. For example, Jesus said,
I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever (John 6:51).
A crazy claim? Not when you consider that Jesus had just proved His power. After speaking a blessing over a boy’s meal of 5 loaves and 2 small fishes, Jesus turned them into enough food to satisfy over 5,000 hungry people (John 6:5-14).
Jesus boldly claimed, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me“ (John 14:6).
He could say that because He had raised corpses from death to life (Luke 7:12-17, 22; 8:49-56). As He stood by a grave, He said to the dead man’s sister,
“I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die“ (John 11:25-26).
Then He turned His words into actions.
[Jesus] cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.“ The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go“ (John 11:43-44).
Jesus and Lazarus were close friends, and Jesus nurtures similar friendship with all His followers (John 15:13-15). Do you sense how personal Jesus is? Do you see how involved He is in meeting real needs? He deeply cares for us. His life is full of powerful, practical help. His life-style was so well known that His follower Peter could summarize the Good News in this way:
As for the word that he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace through Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all), you yourselves know what happened throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John proclaimed: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him (Acts 10:36-38).
Enjoying the Good News means knowing Jesus as your Lord and Friend. It also means sharing in the central Event of His life.
