After some few years of war, Joshua took the land and divided it among the tribes of Israel, who were the descendants of the twelve sons of Jacob (Israel).
So the LORD gave Israel all the land he had sworn to give their forefathers, and they took possession of it and settled there. The LORD gave them rest on every side, just as he had sworn to their forefathers. Not one of their enemies withstood them; the LORD handed all their enemies over to them. Not one of all the LORD’s good promises to the house of Israel failed; every one was fulfilled. Joshua 21.43-45
Joshua then challenged the people to follow the ways of the Lord, the one true God, and to walk in the right path. Before he died, he told the people these words:
“Now I am about to go the way of all the earth. You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the LORD your God gave you has failed. Every promise has been fulfilled; not one has failed. But just as every good promise of the LORD your God has come true, so the LORD will bring on you all the evil he has threatened, until he has destroyed you from this good land he has given you. If you violate the covenant of the LORD your God, which he commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them, the LORD’s anger will burn against you, and you will quickly perish from the good land he has given you.” Joshua 23.14-16
But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.” Joshua 24.15
Joshua proclaimed that God had kept all his promises to Israel about their land. He proved his covenant with them, as he said to Abraham and to Moses. Joshua also challenged the people to serve only the one true God. He new that there would be terrible judgment on them if they turned away from true religion.
