Are you ready for the first surprise—at least a surprise for those of us who live for music? During many centuries of biblical history, music goes nearly unnoticed in the written record. Perhaps this is because music is simply part of everyday life.
Look at how Genesis 4 introduces instruments in the context of Lamech’s remarkable family. Lamech’s oldest son is Jabal, “the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock” (Genesis 4:20). Then comes his brother Jubal, the music man (Genesis 4:21). Next comes their brother Tubal-cain “the forger of all instruments of bronze and iron” (Genesis 4:22). Music is obviously special. But so is skillful metallurgy, and even expert cattle raising and breeding. That is another wonder of God’s creation, that He lets us imagine, invent and craft in a vast variety of ways. Do you believe that you are made in the Creator’s image? Then expect to share His creativity. Sometimes we bury that part of us, especially if we feel inferior by comparing ourselves with others. The truth is, you too are made in God’s image (James 3:9). You too are uniquely gifted. Stay open to discovering ways in which you share your Creator’s creativity.
Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them….(Romans 12:6)
As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace. (1 Peter 4:10)
