Tests usually start with a standard. A teacher, for example, has a list of the correct answers and compares that list with answers given by students. A health official knows what healthy drinking water looks like. That is his standard as he inspects other water under a microscope. A builder has a ruler and a plan or blueprint, and he consults both as he builds.

Jesus is our standard. He is the authentic original—“the founder and perfecter of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2). In the matter of healing the sick, He took on the full range of health problems with complete success. Notice the repeated use of the word “every” in these Gospel accounts:

[Jesus] went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the Gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people (Matthew 4:23).

That evening they brought to Him many who were oppressed by demons, and He cast out the spirits with a word and healed all who were sick (Matthew 8:16).

Further, Jesus gave the same full range of powers to His apostles.

[Jesus] called to Him His twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction (Matthew 10:1).
