Money itself is neutral, and being rich is not sinful. Job and Abraham were wealthy. But, as shown by 1 Timothy 6:9-11, it is the desire for riches that so easily becomes idolatry. As Paul also said, flee from the love of money! Pursue spiritual virtues, which are true treasures (1 Timothy 6:19). In this same passage, Paul warns that false teachers are “depraved in mind and deprived of the truth, imagining that godliness is a means of gain” (1 Timothy 6:5 cf. Acts 8:18; Titus 1:11; 2 Peter 2:3,15). If viewing godliness as a path to earthly gain (wealth) is “depraved,” what does that say about exploiting miracles in Jesus’ name? The Lord Himself would not use even the simplest miracle to benefit himself; He refused to turn stones to bread for his great hunger (Matthew 4:3-4).
