Whatever the reasons, they were wrong. God is love (1 John 4:16). This is the loving God who commands Christians, “Test everything.” His loving command is, “Purge the evil person from among you” (1 Corinthians 5:13 cf. 2 Thessalonians 3:14-15). The unloving thing to do is to stand by while sins and lies destroy souls eternally.

Jesus is the embodiment of love and grace (John 1:14; 13:1; 15:13). Yet He says of the Jezebel of Thyatira,

I will throw her onto a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her I will throw into great tribulation, unless they repent of her works, and I will strike her children dead (Revelation 2:22-23).

Jesus is the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6), but that peace is within His kingdom, among His obedient subjects. He is not at peace with the world and worldliness. Therefore we must choose one or the other, God’s truth or the world’s lies. To choose the latter is spiritual adultery.

You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God (James 4:4).
