So many clear warnings should not be ignored. Satan’s specialty is deception. He often uses disguises to trick people. The fierce wolves of Matthew 7:15 cover themselves with “sheep’s clothing.” That is another way of saying that they make themselves look like “servants of righteousness.”

For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds (2 Corinthians 11:13-15).

Since Satan is real, active and disguised, Christians remain on guard.

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith (1 Peter 5:8-9).

Given such specific warnings, we cannot afford to be naïve or superficial in our investigations. We must have open minds to look at the evidence fairly. The only thing that fears honest questioning is falsehood, for it will then be exposed and rejected. But truth never fears investigation because testing can only strengthen and confirm truth.

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world (1 John 4:1).
