While we recognize the women of Acts, it remains true that the traditional name is “The Acts of the Apostles.” The first section features the apostle Peter and the longest section features the apostle Paul. Others in focus are Stephen and Philip, first listed among the seven men appointed to manage the care for the widows. Interestingly, Stephen uses survey—the method we use for this course—in his speech of Acts 7. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, Stephen traces God’s leadership choices: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, “the twelve patriarchs,” Joseph, Moses, Aaron, David and Solomon. These point to the ultimate leader, the Prophet like Moses who is Jesus, “the Righteous One.” (Stephen’s survey mentions Pharaoh’s daughter in passing.) Paul also uses a survey method in Acts 13:16-41.
