The phrase “will He delay long” is expressed in various ways by different versions. This is because the Greek word makrothumeo can refer here either to delay or, relatedly, to the patience needed in the face of delay. Both have to do with extended time—where many of us experience our greatest struggles. Why does God seem to take so much time in answering our appeals? He seems unconcerned with our urgency. Why does He delay?
Jesus’ answer is simply to assure the disciples that God can be depended on for His part. “He will give justice to them speedily.” If there is any question about dependability, that question must be pointed at us: “Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on earth?” (Luke 18:8).
The Lord is faithful. It is we whose faith tends to weaken.
The Lord is trustworthy. It is we who struggle to trust.
The Lord is dependable. Will the end find us still depending on Him, still believing in His promises?
