And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge says. And will not God give justice to His elect, who cry to Him day and night? Will He delay long over them?” (Luke 18:6-7).
Again Jesus is drawing a contrast. The hapless judge is the very opposite of God.
- The judge cares nothing for justice. But Deuteronomy 32:4 says of our God, “all His ways are justice.”
- The judge cares nothing for others. But God is love (1 John 4:8,16). 1 Peter 5:7 says of our God, “casting all your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you.” He treasures “His elect”—His chosen ones (Luke 18:7).
- The judge is unwilling to help. But Romans 8:32 reasons that if our God went so far as to sacrifice His own Son, surely He will, along with Jesus, “graciously give us all things.”
If persistence works on a wicked man against his will, how much more is persistence rewarded by our just and loving Father who is more than willing to help! Sustained appeal was the secret of the widow’s success, and it will reward us too. The moral of the story is clear:
He told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart…. “And will not God give justice to His elect, who cry to Him day and night? Will He delay long over them? I tell you, He will give justice to them speedily” (Luke 18:1, 7-8).
