Notice the reason that Scripture gives for Jesus’ success.
In the days of His flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to Him who was able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His reverence. Although He was a Son, He learned obedience through what He suffered (Hebrews 5:7-8).
He who sent Me is with Me. He has not left Me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to Him” (John 8:29).
Jesus was in harmony with God’s will. Having lived this principle of prayer, Jesus also applied it to us. Here is how we will be effective in prayer:
If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you (John 15:7).
Prayer’s promises are to those who honor God’s will.
The promise of answered prayer is given to those who honor God’s will. They ask responsibly because they seek to please Him. The promise is not made to those who are continually selfish, irresponsible and disobedient. John shows us the attitude in prayer that He learned from Jesus:
And this is the confidence that we have toward Him, that if we ask anything according to His will He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of Him (1 John 5:14-15).
