The critical question that every seeker of truth must settle is, “Which authority will I follow?” If not addressed, the seeker will revert at some point to a preferred human authority.

  • Example: A cult member follows a modern-day prophet. Though he sees Scripture after Scripture that proves his prophet to be false, he remains unconvinced and unconverted. Why? Because he still thinks his prophet has more authority than anything Scripture says.

That resistance is typical of many faiths. Therefore, in your sequence of lessons, authority ought to be considered early. An example of a Study Sheet on “Authority” can be found in the Topic “Study Sheets for Faith” which is after “Preparing The Next Generation.” (You may want to print these sheets for use later.)

Other Study Sheets are supplied there as well. Look over the Study Sheet entitled “Jesus as the Messiah.” Notice how it uses questions to engage thoughtful consideration. Together, you and your friend read the Scripture and its question. Encourage your friend to supply the answer. If the student replies with a random thought, gently direct the student back to the wording of the Scripture itself. Gradually, the training takes effect. The student differentiates between human opinion and God’s word and develops the habit of looking to the Scriptures for answers. “Jesus as the Messiah” shows how Jesus leads and blesses us, just as was prophesied.
