“Covenant” or “testament” means a solemn agreement. There are a number of examples in the Bible of covenants between two parties.

Abraham and Abimelech “So Abraham took sheep and oxen and gave them to Abimelech, and the two men made a covenant” (Genesis 21:27 cf. Genesis 26:28-31).

Jacob and Laban “Come now, let us make a covenant, you and I. And let it be a witness between you and me” (Genesis 31:44).

Joshua and the Gibeonites “Joshua made peace with them and made a covenant with them, to let them live, and the leaders of the congregation swore to them” (Joshua 9:15; Israelites “swore” in the sense that they confirmed the covenant with an oath).

David and Jonathan “Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul. And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David, and his armor, and even his sword and his bow and his belt” (1 Samuel 18:3-4 cf. 1 Samuel 20:8; 23:18).

David and the elders “So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord. And they anointed David king over Israel” (1 Chronicles 11:3 cf. 2 Samuel 3:12).

Husband and wife “The Lord was witness between you and the wife of your youth, to whom you have been faithless, though she is your companion and your wife by covenant” (Malachi 2:14). As we see here, marriage is called a “covenant” between a husband and wife. The marriage covenant usually starts with a wedding, which includes a ceremony and vows. Like marriage, many covenants begin in some way that is formal and public.

Israel was not permitted to make covenants or treaties with the Canaanites (Exodus 23:32; 34:12; Judges 2:2).

More treaty examples may be found in 1 Samuel 11:1; 1 Kings 5:12; 15:19 and 20:34. Israelites renewed their covenant with God in passages like Joshua 24:25; 2 Kings 11:17; 23:2-3; 2 Chronicles 15:12; 29:10 and Psalm 50:5. Various other examples include 2 Kings 11:4,17; Job 31:1; Isaiah 28:15,18; Jeremiah 34:9-11; Ezekiel 30:5; Hosea 10:4; 12:1; Amos 1:9 and Obadiah 1:7.
