As the New Testament emphasizes, the whole law can be melted down into one word: love (Matthew 7:12; 22:36-40; Galatians 5:14; James 2:8). If you recognize the good contained in the law, and you want to fulfill that, then Paul would urge you to love.
“Love is the fulfilment of the law.”
Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. (Romans 13:8-10)
Indeed, the Spirit introduces and empowers a new level of love. “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another (John 13:34). To love as Jesus loves is truly new, reaching dimensions never before known on earth (Ephesians 3:17- 19; 5:1-2). To love like Jesus is the truest, most lasting kind of glory. Such love fulfills the law—indeed, the spirit of all good law—more fully than even Moses could have envisioned.
