We have already found the first reason, to produce children.  Another very important reason for a husband and wife to have sex, or make love, is for pleasure.  The Bible is very clear about that.  Consider the following scriptures:

The wise man, Solomon, instructed his son about marriage.  He told him to “drink water from your own well,” or have sex only with your own wife.  He added that his son should protect his streams of water and not let them flow in the street to be shared with others. What he was saying was, do not let your sexual relationship and your offspring be for other people other than your wife.  Then Solomon told his son, “rejoice in the wife of your youth…may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be captivated by her love.”  (Proverbs 5:15-19)

Most of the book of Song of Solomon refers to the sexual love of a husband and his wife.

The apostle Paul wrote the whole chapter of 1 Corinthians 7 about marriage.  He clearly talked about the love life of a husband and wife.  Read verses 2-5.

“But sexual sin is a danger, so each man should enjoy his own wife, and each woman should enjoy her own husband.  The husband should give his wife what she deserves as his wife.  And the wife should give her husband what he deserves as her husband.  The wife does not have power over her own body. Her husband has the power over her body.  And the husband does not have power over his own body.  His wife has the power over his body.  Don’t refuse to give your bodies to each other…”  (1 Corinthians 7:2-5 ERV).

Not only does God want a husband and wife to have sex to produce children but he wants them to express their love to one another by giving themselves freely and completely in the pleasure of sex.  We are told that after God made Adam and Eve they were joined together and became one body.  And then the scripture says, “They were both naked but they were not ashamed.” (Genesis 2:24-25)

Some false teachers teach that the first sin in the Bible was between Adam and Eve when they had sex together.  The Bible does not teach that.  The first sin was disobedience to God’s command to not eat the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.  (Genesis 3) How could God command Adam and Eve to have sex to be “fruitful and fill the earth” and at the same time say it is sin.  God does not speak out of both sides of His mouth.  Sex, as God intended it, is holy, it pleases God, and there is no sin in it.  The Hebrew writer says,

“Marriage should be honored by everyone.  And every marriage should be kept pure between husband and wife.  God will judge guilty those who commit sexual sins and adultery”  (Hebrews 13:4).
