Psalm 91 is perfectly true. However, like any other Scripture, it is to be understood with other Bible passages, not against them. Thus, Jesus quoted another passage, Deuteronomy 6:16, which said, “You shall not put the LORD your God to the test” (Luke 4:12). Truly, God protects His people. Equally truly, His people should not presume upon His protection by acting foolishly. Truly, God’s people trust His promises. Equally truly, trust obeys God’s warning and refuses to force a test on God by taking needless risks.
Notice that Jesus did not deny the truth of Psalm 91. Rather, Jesus showed that Psalm 91’s promise must be balanced with the command in Deuteronomy 6. Any biblical truth should be treated in agreement with other biblical truths. No Scripture is to be taken alone, as if it is an island on its own. Every passage in the Bible is a part of the whole. The surrounding message—the context—helps to clarify and properly apply the meaning of any verse. Balance, harmony and context are familiar to anyone who handles Scripture correctly.
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15).
