Paul recognized this as a major attack on the Gospel. He immediately challenged the Circumcision Party. “This brought Paul and Barnabas into sharp dispute and debate with them” (Acts 15:2). Barnabas and Paul soon met with the other apostles, the elders, and other leaders at Jerusalem (Acts 15:2-4). Under the Spirit’s guidance they reaffirmed Christ as the way of salvation. “We believe that we will be saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, just as they [the Gentiles] will” (Acts 15:11). The inspired statement issued by the leaders should have resolved the whole matter (Acts 15:12-32). But, as is often the case, Satan would not let it rest. The Circumcision Party—now clearly acting as false teachers—kept insisting on a return to the law of Moses. They dogged Paul’s tracks and tried to subvert anyone he won to Christ. Paul, for his part, kept defending the Gospel of Christ. His letters reflect the struggle. He sternly warned that taking the circumcision road led away from Christ.

For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. Look: I, Paul, say to you that if you accept circumcision, Christ will be of no advantage to you. I testify again to every man who accepts circumcision that he is obligated to keep the whole law. You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace (Galatians 5:1-4).
