We all find ourselves living with the results of history. We did not choose the heritage passed to us by previous generations. We were born into the traditions of our families. A study of history helps with understanding where we are and how we came to be here. It also helps us to discern Christ’s will, revealed in Scripture, as compared with traditions of human origin.

When we learn Christ’s will, we are faced with a choice. Do we follow Christ or tradition? The answer should be obvious. But some ask, “If I change, isn’t that dishonoring my forefathers by saying they were wrong?” Jesus provides the answer. Yes, He wants us to honor our parents (Matthew 15:4). Through them, He gave us life. Yet He also gave them and their ancestors life. We all owe our existence to Him (John 1:3; Hebrews 1:2-3 cf. Acts 17:28).

That is why the Lord is to be loved and honored far above our finest relatives (Mark 12:30; Luke 14:25-27). If our parents have passed from this earth, they would be the first to agree that Christ alone has “all authority” over the living and the dead (Matthew 28:18; Acts 10:42; Romans 14:9; Revelation 1:18). He alone has the power to save, not they (Acts 4:12). Were our ancestors sincerely trying to do right with the knowledge they had? Then honor them by sincerely doing right with the knowledge you now have.

Each generation should be learning more and changing for the better. Yes, in a sense we are a product of history. But God also gives us the power to make history, to break old habits and build healthier futures for our children. Write a better history that honors the Lord more and more.
