Complaint Part of sincerity is being honest with God even about our struggles and negative feelings. There is no point in hiding them Psalm 139:1-6. OT Examples of prayers that question and pour out complaints Abraham Genesis 18:17-33; Moses Numbers 11:10-35; Job Job 6:8-9; 7:17-21; 9:25-35; 10; 14; 23; Psalmists Psalm 10:1-10; 13:1-2; 22:1-21; 44:9-26; 55:2,17; 60:1-3; 79:1-11; 89:38-49; 102:1-11; 142:2-4; Jeremiah Jeremiah 12:1-4; Lamentations 1:20-22; 2:19-22; 5:1-20; Elijah 1 Kings 19:4; Joel Joel 1:19-20; Jonah Jonah 4:1-3; Habakkuk Habakkuk 1:1-4,12-17; cf. Revelation 7:9-12 These were not the questionings and murmurings of the disobedient who impugn God’s character Deuteronomy 1:26-27; Numbers 11:1; 21:5; Psalms 78:17-22; 106:25; Malachi 1:6-7. The NT has little of similar nature. Jesus cried Psalm 22 for us Matthew 27:46; Mark 15:34, and reveals much not previously known John 8:32; 1 Corinthians 2:6-12; Ephesians 3:5. That does not lessen the fact that struggles are extreme 2 Corinthians 1:8; 4:8; 7:5 cf. Revelations 6:10.

Thanks OT Levitical worship emphasized thanksgiving Leviticus 22:29; 1 Chronicles 16:4-8,41; 25:3; 29:13; 2 Chronicles 30:22; 31:2; Nehemiah 11:17; 12:24. “I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart; I will recount all of Your wonderful deeds. Insincerity OT God rejects insincerity and inconsistency. “They delight to draw near to God. ‘Why have we fasted, and You see it not? Why have we humbled ourselves, and You take no knowledge of it?’ Behold, in the day of your fast you seek your own pleasure, and oppress all your workers. Behold, you fast only to quarrel and to fight and to hit with a wicked fist. Fasting like yours this day will not make your voice to be heard on high” Isaiah 58:2-4. NT “Beware of the scribes who devour widows’ houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation” Mark 12:40 cf. Luke 20:47; Acts 5:1-10; James 4:3; 2 Peter 3:7,12.
