While Isaac was still young, Almighty God decided to do something very powerful. This is an amazing test he gave Abraham:
Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about.” Genesis 22.2
Abraham surely found this very difficult, but he made every preparation to obey the will of God. As the time came to kill Isaac on the altar, God spoke to Abraham and told him to stop. God said:
“Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.” Genesis 22.12
God provided a sheep that had been caught in the thick bushes for the sacrifice. Abraham and Isaac worshiped God and prayed together. Once again, God promised to bless Abraham and use his family to bring blessings to the whole world. Isaac grew to receive his father’s blessing and authority even though Abraham had more sons.
