Any reader of the Old Testament must be impressed with the enduring quality of the covenant God made through Moses. Terms like “lasting,” “continual,” “forever” and “for the generations to come” appear often in the writings of Moses.

When God makes a covenant, it is no light matter. God always speaks truthfully. He is good and faithful. Therefore, His covenant is lasting and dependable.

Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love Him and keep His commandments, to a thousand generations. (Deuteronomy 7:9)

The works of His hands are faithful and just; all His precepts are trustworthy; they are established forever and ever, to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness. He sent redemption to His people; He has commanded His covenant forever. (Psalm 111:7-9)

God’s faithfulness makes every aspect of His covenant secure. Humans, however, tend to be unfaithful. They also forget easily from one generation to the next. So, God often reminded the Israelites of the continual and perpetual nature of their obligations.
