When fierce spirits attack you, what do you do? “Stand firm!” (Ephesians 6:14). Keep watch in the power of prayer,9 lest you “fall from your secure position.”10

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8).
Never become comfortable11 in this world, which has turned traitor to its rightful King. Expect spiritual attack from any direction.
- Attack may come from within, through your own weaknesses, wishes and wants.12 “As sojourners and exiles… abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul” (1 Peter 2:11).
- Attack may come through relatives and friends,13 or even fellow-Christians who set poor examples that discourage and hurt you.14
- Attack may come through good times or through illness,15
- It may come through religious leaders who follow demons (1 Timothy 4:1-4) into teachings that itching ears like to hear.16 “For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness” (2 Corinthians 11:13-15). Paul warned the elders of the church in Ephesus: “I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them. Therefore be alert…” (Acts 20:29-31).
- It may come through opponents who seek to ruin your good name and influence.17 Everywhere Paul went, enemies soon rose up to resist the truth. Of his experience in Ephesus, Paul wrote, “But I will stay in Ephesus until Pentecost, for a wide door for effective work has opened to me, and there are many adversaries” (1 Corinthians 16:8-9). Satan, the “father of lies,” trains his children to lie about God’s family. Hence Jesus and Paul were falsely accused, and you will be too.18
- Attacks may come through threats,19 losses,20 hard-pressing burdens,21 government oppression,22 or even physical harm.23 Paul wrote about his experiences in Ephesus, “For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers, of the affliction we experienced in Asia. For we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself” (2 Corinthians 1:8). In Ephesus itself, “there arose no little disturbance concerning the Way” 24 and “the city was filled with the confusion” (Acts 19:23,29).
