As the Son of God and the Son of Man, Jesus is uniquely qualified to be our “one Lord” and our “one Mediator.” He is the way God the Father has spoken to us today. But how do we, two thousand years later, hear the Son’s voice? Through the third person of the Godhead, the Holy Spirit. He worked especially through the official spokesmen—the apostles—whom Jesus appointed and trained. Jesus promised that the Spirit would cause the apostles to remember all that He had taught them. At that time, more had yet to be revealed. So, Jesus assured the apostles that the Spirit would guide them into “all the truth.” Later, when division threatened the young congregation at Corinth, Paul appealed to the Lord’s authority and to the Spirit’s words that revealed “the mind of Christ.” We today have those same Spirit-inspired words in the writings of the inspired spokesmen. Indeed, “all Scripture is breathed out by God” and is designed to guide and correct us. The Scriptures prepare us for “every good work,” which surely includes our part in maintaining the unity of the Spirit.
