This principle is evident throughout biblical history: Strong leadership unites people. Weak or absent leadership divides and scatters them. For us, there should be only one Leader—“one Lord”—Jesus, the Son of God. He is the anointed Ruler—“the Christ”—predicted by Moses and the Old Testament prophets. He is both the descendent of David and his “Lord” (Psalm 110). Through the prophets, God predicted that His rule would bring unity and peace. This harmony was famously pictured as lions eating straw with oxen and children playing beside snakes. As amazing as Old Testament pictures were, their fulfilment in Christ is even greater. He rules, not from the earth, but from heaven itself. We need to hear Him say, “My kingdom is not of this world.” That will help us to understand the kind of unity we enjoy in His kingdom.
