Welcome to this Bible course Unity in Christ.
King David composed a song (Psalm 133) that begins, “Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!” As a boy, David had a strained relationship with his oldest brother. As a man, David had been at the center of a civil war. He celebrated when peace finally came to his nation. He knew the wonder and the value of unity.
David’s descendant was Jesus, the greatest King or “Christ.” He, too, experienced a life of conflict. As His enemies closed in to kill Him, Jesus promised peace and he composed a prayer for unity (John 14:27; 16:33; 17:11, 20-23).
Today, our world still suffers from family quarrels, divisive politics, fights and wars. Even among those who claim the name “Christian” we see many divisions. Was Jesus being overly optimistic in promising peace? Did His promise fail? What about His prayer for unity, did God hear that prayer? Or, has that failed too?
In answer, the Scriptures affirm: “Yes, Jesus delivered peace! Yes, God heard His Son’s prayer and fulfilled all that was requested!”
These answers are not wishful thinking. They are not an attempt by Christians to put the best face on a bad situation. Look more carefully into the promise and the prayer. Jesus asked His Father for perfect unity (John 17:23). Still today, the Father gives just that—perfect unity!
Do you value unity? Do you seek peace? Then let the Lord, through His inspired Scriptures, lead you into His clear answers. Be ready to be surprised by fresh discoveries. In your own life, come to know the peace that passes understanding. Come to experience the perfection of the unity for which Jesus prayed.
Enjoy your journey into God’s Word!
