Would you agree that Deborah stands out as an exception, at least among leaders for God’s people from Genesis through Judges? The question is how that exception applies today. History records a number of exceptional events (2 Chronicles 30:18; Joshua 10:12-14; 1 Samuel 21:6 with Matthew 12:3-4; 15:24-28; Luke 4:27). What is the common factor? In every case, God makes or allows the exception. God makes the rules and God can bypass them when He wishes. That is different from humans presuming to make God’s exceptions for Him. Deborah does not appoint herself. She does not choose to break the mold. In a time of need, God raises her up as an inspired prophet. Along with the victory itself, she delights in Israel’s responsive leaders.

That the leaders took the lead in Israel, that the people offered themselves willingly, bless the LORD!…. My heart goes out to the commanders of Israel who offered themselves willingly among the people. Bless the LORD (Judges 5:2, 9).
