If he cannot stop our prayer life, Satan will try to throw it off balance. He can hardly cause us to over-emphasize the practice of prayer, since we are to pray continually, day and night (1 Thessalonians 3:10; 5:17). But he can try to over-emphasize the part prayer plays: “Prayer is all you need to be a spiritual person. In this age of grace, you don’t need to take God’s commands too seriously.”
The example of Jesus shows profound respect for the Scriptures. He put Scripture into practice by humble service and sacrifice. Prayer cannot be made to stand alone. The Lord’s context for prayer was obedient living. His promises regarding prayer were made to disciples, defined as those who abide in His word (John 8:31; 15:7, 10, 14). True prayer says, “Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven… beginning right here with me!”
