In an earlier discussion we saw that Jesus was “serious” about prayer. This lesson’s subject may seem similar, but refers to another distinct quality in the prayers of Jesus. Under the title “serious” we noted the time and attention which Jesus gave to prayer, even giving up needs of His body in order to be healthy in prayer. Under this title “sincere” we see the thought and feeling which Jesus invested in His prayers.

Some people see little room for emotion in their religion. Perhaps emotion reminds them of the excesses of false, showy religions. Some cultures view men as “strong” and “manly” when they hide their emotions. But the religion of the Bible is hardly unemotional. Read such classics as the Psalms, the Song of Solomon, Lamentations and Revelation. More than that, look at the life of Jesus!
