Welcome to the Bible course, “Lord, Teach Us To Pray”!

This was a disciple’s request, as recorded for us by Dr. Luke.

Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when He finished, one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray…” (Luke 11:1).

This course, based on Jesus’ reply and example, is a training course for “disciples”—learners and followers who are being transformed by the Master. As Jesus said,

A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher (Luke 6:40).

Our focus here is on becoming like Jesus in prayer. This course, therefore, is about change from where we are to where Jesus is. In this adventure, the Father gives us power beyond our dreams. He fulfills the extraordinary potential for which He designed us.

OUR METHOD in this COURSE
To place ourselves at the feet of Jesus and to learn from Him.

OUR AIM in this COURSE
To imitate the prayer life of Jesus, and so to share in His effectiveness.

OUR PREPARATION
Read the Scriptures and lesson.
Answer questions.
Pray for the lesson’s principle to grow in you.
Practice that principle.

EXTRA REFERENCES AND NOTES

In this course we learn to pray by watching Jesus, listening to His teachings, and following His example. This focus on Jesus means that most Scripture quotations and references come from the New Testament, especially the Gospel accounts of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

The Bible as a whole has much more to say about prayer. To show this wider range of Scriptures, we offer Extra References and Notes on some of the course’s subjects. The extra notes are not part of the course itself. No “Thought Questions” depend on these extra notes. Instead, we offer these extra notes for the benefit of students who wish to go deeper into God’s word. Each topic shows extra Scriptures from the Old Testament (OT) and the New Testament (NT). For a thorough study of a topic, read the course first, then the relevant extra notes. Scriptures in the main courses are not necessarily repeated in the notes.
