Grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ! See Ephesians 3:18

You were on Paul’s prayer list! Did you know that? Ephesians 3:14-21 records the heart of his prayer. It is, of course, a prayer for his first readers. Yet Paul plainly states that he intends his prayer to cover “all the saints” 1 – which now includes us, the saints of the 21st century. Paul’s prayer uses the most surprising terms. He wants the family of God to know the unknowable, to search the unsearchable, to grasp what is beyond reach. What is this awesome mystery? Heaven’s overflowing LOVE that floods down for our benefit!

Knowing The Unknowable

…that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God (Eph 3:16-19). Divine love is like an ocean. At the beach our children play in its waves. We adults swim further into it, but there is so much more beyond us. A lifetime exploring the ocean’s depths only begins to discover its wonders. Our eyes can see the ocean, yet they fail to view all its vastness. We can know the sea, yet never fully understand it. The love of Christ is like that, known, yet surpassing knowledge; held, yet too great to encompass; enjoyed, yet always open to fresh discoveries. God invites every one of us – “all the saints” – to explore the unfathomable depths, to ascend the unreachable heights, to experience the endless expanses of His love. This is much more than a mental exercise. We do not explore the sea just by thinking or reading about it. We get into it. In the same way, we plunge into God’s love with all our being, learning it, living it and sharing it. The more we know God, the more we discover how true it is: “GOD IS LOVE” (1 John 4:8).
