How should correspondence help to mature new Christians? That was the question facing World Bible School writers after basic Gospel courses had been completed. God, of course, had already given the answer. For example, Paul brought many to Christ. When he could not stay with them, how did he continue to instruct and encourage them? He corresponded. That is, he wrote letters back to them. In fact, all the letters from Romans through Revelation were a form of follow-up, written to strengthen Christians and congregations.
The WBS course Born of Water and Spirit leads to consideration of the spiritual family into which we are born. Which New Testament letter has that focus? Ephesians describes the “household of God” (Ephesians 2:19). Likewise, Paul wrote 1 Timothy that “you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God” (1 Timothy 3:14-15). Like 1 Timothy (1:3), a number of New Testament writings relate to Ephesus. With Ephesians, they paint a full picture of God’s household, leading to the WBS course, The Family of God. This contextual course, with many cross-references and research notes, is for serious students. If your student needs to understand the nature of the Lord’s church, as distinct from today’s denominational confusion, The Family of God will be most helpful.
