God confused the languages of the human race at Babel. This caused people to spread throughout Asia to live in their own groups. We read in the Torah of Moses that God spoke to Abraham (Ibrahim). God told him to leave his father’s land and travel to a land that God would give to him and his children. This man Abraham, sometimes called Abram, was a man of faith who trusted in God. We read of his life and service to God in Genesis, the first book of the Torah, chapters 12 through 25. God spoke to Abraham and made a covenant (holy agreement) with him.

The LORD had said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” Genesis 12.1-3

God freely offered honor, protection, and great success to Abraham. This is what the people at Babel were trying to take for themselves through pride and selfishness. Why was this promise made to Abraham? Because of his faith in God. Abraham obeyed whatever God instructed him to do. Abraham trusted God and depended on God’s grace. This is how the Apostle Paul explained it many years later in the holy writings of the Bible:

Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham’s offspring—not only to those who are of the law but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all. As it is written: “I have made you a father of many nations.” He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed—the God who gives life to the dead and calls things that are not as though they were. Romans 4.16-17
