The only answer I know is that God makes it so. God makes us. God makes music. And in some mysterious way, God puts the two together. The same is true of everything that connects with us as beautiful and emotive. Here are a few examples of God’s creation and our creativity:
- God’s art in the world around us, expressed in an endless range of colors and tones, shapes and patterns.
- Human imitation of God’s art, expressed in an astounding array of media from clay to canvas, from silk to film, and beyond.
- God’s nutrients and delicacies that grow in nature.
- Human preparations of food, resulting in tastes from subtle to striking, from mouthwatering to eye-watering, from pleasure-filled to perplexing.
- God’s gift of touch, by which we access textures, tones and temperatures.
- Human applications designed for feel, whether in fabric, metal machined for smoothness, grain and contours, and even heating and cooling.
- God’s wonderful world of smells.
- Human arrangements of those smells in aromatic incense, fragrant perfumes, repellents, and much more.
Why are all these things so… well, so good? Because God makes it so! In Genesis chapter one, God’s creative acts end with this rhythmic refrain: “And God saw that it was good” (Genesis 1:10, 12, 18, 21, 25). After God crowns creation with the human family, Genesis 1:31 concludes, “And God saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good.” All that God gives is good. More than that, He enjoys our healthy enjoyment of His creation.
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights. (James 1:17)
God… richly provides us with everything to enjoy. (1 Timothy 6:17)
