In God’s definition of marriage, the last thing he said was that this new married couple become “one flesh.” Jesus said, “they are no longer two, but one.” Yes, they still have their two individual bodies and characteristics. But in marriage an amazing thing happens. They become one flesh. This is much more than the consummation of marriage by sexual intercourse, although sex is an important, ongoing part of the uniting of a husband and wife. Paul taught about this closeness in marriage in Ephesians 5:21-31. The husband loves his wife and takes care of her like he does for himself. The wife respects her husband and honors him. They take care of each other just like they take care of themselves. One does not make plans by himself, but he confers with his wife. She does not plan things by herself, but she talks to her husband. They have no secrets. They labor together like a team—working as one body!
