Marriage is a very special part of God’s plan. It is a wonderful example of His creative genius.
In the Genesis account of creation, God began to create humans by making individuals. The first man, Adam, was a unique individual. The first woman, Eve, was another unique person. Even today, among billions of people on earth, you are unique. No one else on earth is exactly like you, with your special blend of characteristics.
What you do share with other humans is the ability to relate to your Creator. In certain ways, you are a reflection, a likeness of God.
Then God said, “Let us make man in Our image, after Our likeness…” (Genesis 1:26).
When God created the first individuals, He created them in two stages: first, the human male, then the human female. He created them for each other. Marriage is God’s idea. If the first two humans, Adam and Eve, were the crown of God’s creation, then the gold on the crown was their coming together, their marriage.
Genesis shows how God created the perfect world. It also shows how that world became imperfect. Today, every marriage has problems. Any time two people stay together there will be times when they have disagreements, arguments, and anger. You were raised with a certain way of doing things, a certain way of thinking. But your marriage partner was raised with a different way of life. Neither one is necessarily bad, it is just who you are. There are differences in the way men and women think and do things. When you combine those two different ways of life, there may be disagreements. Marriage is like a road that goes up a hill where there is sunshine, then it goes down into the valley where there is darkness. Some days your marriage will be wonderful, hopefully most of the time, but some days it will seem like nothing you do is right. What is the answer?
