One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ)… Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph (John 1:40-41,45).

Prophecies are messages given by God about the future. Prophets give these messages. God, through the prophets, drew a picture of the coming Messiah. Every Jew who heard readings from the Old Testament knew parts of this picture well. When Andrew and Philip met Jesus they began to see ways in which Jesus fit the picture God drew. Faithful Jews had waited hundreds of years for this very time. This kind of good news had to be shared, and so Philip soon told his friend about Jesus.
